It’s that time of year again folks, the Westword Showcase is upon us and for all you loyal readers I am giving away 3 pairs of tickets to some lucky readers. It seems as if this event gets bigger, better, faster, stronger…..ok maybe I took it a bit far there, but nonetheless it is always a guaranteed good time. This year we have some serious headliners Ghostland Observatory, Neon Indian, Dirty Projectors, Superchunk, Boombox along with some of the best local acts in Colorado taking the various stages across the Golden Triangle. With full-on football (aka soccer) mania about to consume the minds and hearts of billions around the globe, The FADER wanted to express what the sport means to us. Faced with that seemingly daunting task, we decided to focus on what we know—music, art and culture—and view the game through the creative endeavors inspired by it. To that end, The FADER has joined with Nike Sportswear to present our collaborative project, Pitch Perfect.

Starting on June 1, 2010, and stretching over the next several weeks, we will give you new music from all over the world via continental mixtapes made by top selectors, limited edition screen-printed posters inspired by football’s global reach, and, best of all, a special documentary series filmed in South Africa by The FADER crew as football fans deluge the country. While we’re there, Nike Sportswear and The FADER will present a live music event on June 16 at Nike’s brand new Football Training Center in Soweto, featuring artists from all over Africa, that will also be streamed live on nikesportswear.com and thefader.com/pitchperfect so that all those who couldn’t make it to South Africa can feel like they did.

June 16 will mark the 34th anniversary of the Soweto uprising, when young people spoke out and marched against the government and its attempts to divide South Africa’s people based on the color of their skin. The day has since become a national holiday for all of South Africa to recognize the importance of confronting its greatest challenges. In 2010, that challenge is HIV, and Youth Day will be committed to engaging the disease and defeating it, not just in South Africa, but all over the world. Our event, with creative workshops, educational speakers, HIV testing at the Nike Football Training Center’s (NIKE) RED-sponsored clinic, and the aforementioned concert, will be our attempt to pitch in.

Pitch Perfect is Nike Sportswear and The FADER’s celebration of South Africa, Africa as a whole, and football in general. To billions around the world, football is much more than a game played on a pitch—it’s life. It inspires in people a desire to achieve and to represent where they are from to the best of their abilities. It’s a part of everything they do and make, and this is every South African’s chance to show us what they got.

So this years Austin City Limits Lineup is out, it looks like a trip to Austin, Texas may be in the works for the weekend of October 8-10. Here is the lineup for your viewing pleasure: (via MTV)

“A little something old, a little something new. That’s the story at this year’sAustin City Limits festival, which will take place from October 8-10 at Zilker Park in Austin, Texas, and feature headlining sets from the Eagles,Muse, M.I.A., LCD Soundsystem and Phish.

Also on the 130-act roster from the same folks that bring you Chicago’s Lollapalooza are the Strokes, the Flaming Lips, Spoon, Vampire Weekend, Norah Jones, Band of Horses, Monsters of Folk, Sonic Youth, the National, Broken Bells, Yeasayer, Beach House and Gaslight Anthem.

The eclectic roster ranges from such Austin favorites as singer-songwriter Robert Earl Keen and techno superstar Deadmau5, to gypsy punks Gogol Bordello, blues duo the Black Keys, soul revivalists the Temper Trap and freak folkie Devendra Banhart. According to organizers, three-day passes for the event sold out even before the lineup was announced, but single-day tickets ($85) go on sale Tuesday (May 18).

Ironman 2 Review:

So I had a chance to check out the latest installment of the Ironman franchise, and was going in with some high expectations. Although I enjoyed the movie (which is often a hard task to pull off a sequel, especially if you come out swinging with the first one). I have always regarded Robert Downey Jr. as one of my favorite actors, yeah he had his share of troubles early on, but I still regard Less Than Zero as one of his best films, many would say that it reflected his real life during that time, he turned things around and now is one of Hollywood’s leading men. The movie itself has a who’s who of a cast including the ravishing Scarlett Johanson as Black Widow, Gwyneth Paltrow reprising her role as the lovable Pepper Potts, Don Cheadle who replaces Terrence Howard as Lt. Rhodes, Mickey Rourke (this guy seems more popular now then his 9.5 Weeks days) as Russian bad guy Whiplash/Ivan Vanko, and Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer.

The story leaves off where the first one left off, pretty typical plot, the United States Government wants possession of the Iron Man weapon, which Mr. Tony Stark reluctantly does not want to give up. Justin Hammer wants the Iron Man to weaponize, Ivan Vanko loses his father who was responsible for the Arc Reactor and seeks revenge for all the fame Stark is getting. Meanwhile Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) who makes a cameo in the first installment is back as the head of S.H.I.E.L.D., this time recruiting Black Widow to infiltrate the Stark Industries company as a spy. I will spare out all the details, but I will say that the movie does live up to expectations. It is your typical Summer blockbuster, it has all your typical special effects, story lines, cheesy one-liners, and all-star casts. Iron Man 2 is highly recommended and leaves the door open for another sequel and the much rumored The Avengers movie. I also recommend staying after the credits of the movie for a surprise.

Colorado’s Mile High Music Festival officially announces its 2010 event: August 14 and 15 at The Fields at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. With Dave Matthews Band and Jack Johnson topping the bill of over 40 bands over two days, 2010 promises to be the festival’s biggest and best year yet.

In addition to the headliners, 2010 performance highlights include Weezer, Steve Miller Band, My Morning Jacket, Slightly Stoopid, Atmosphere, Phoenix, Train, Nas & Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Keane, Bassnectar, Cypress Hill, Z-Trip, Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Band, Drive-By Truckers, Railroad Earth, Ozomatli and many others. The complete list of performers is listed below. Doors will open at 11:00 a.m. each day.

A relative newcomer on the national festival scene, Mile High Music Festival has already become a summer tradition for Colorado residents and for music fans from coast to coast. The festival grounds, with its remarkable views of the Denver skyline and Rocky Mountain Front Range, is the perfect backdrop for this diverse, lively, and distinctly Colorado music and arts festival.

The Fields at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park is conveniently located just nine miles from downtown Denver, and only 1.8 miles from the I-70 and Quebec exit.

Black Keys announce tour....

The Black Keys will support their highly anticipated new album, Brothers—due out May 18 on Nonesuch Records—with a summer tour beginning June 2 in Salt Lake City.

Pre-sale tickets for the tour dates will go on sale Tuesday, March 30. Those who purchase pre-sale tickets through the band’s website,theblackkeys.com, will receive a special bundle, which includes a copy of Brothers (digital only or physical and digital, CD or vinyl) upon release. Additionally, pre-sale tickets will come with an instant download of two tracks from Brothers—“Tighten Up” and “Next Girl.” The Black Keys will also be playing select dates in April and May, highlighted by an opening slot for Pearl Jam at Madison Square Garden on May 20, as well as performances on the Late Show with David Letterman on May 25 and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on May 26, as previously reported in the Nonesuch Journal.

The new album includes the Danger Mouse-produced song “Tighten Up,” streaming now on the band’s MySpace page,myspace.com/theblackkeys, and a cover of the Jerry Butler classic “Never Gonna Give You Up.” The remaining songs on Brothers are written, performed, and produced by The Black Keys.
